At our last meeting, we had presenter Mr Tom Sterling from AccessComm to inform us about the CapTel telephone service for people who are hearing impaired.
The Captioned Telephone, or CapTel, works like any other high access telephone with one important addition: It displays every word the caller says throughout the conversation, including signal tones and answering machine messages. CapTel phone users can listen to the caller, and also read the written captions on the CapTel's bright display screen, a service supplied by the NRS (National Relay Service).
The phone also has external output jacks for connecting headsets and neck-loop adapters, as well as adjustable tone control during calls.
The captioning is done instantly by specially trained NRS operators.
While you do not need a computer to be connected to the telephone, an internet service is required to allow the phone to work.
If you wish to discuss this directly with Tom, he is available for a free consultation on
